With most other web-based email providers, Yahoo, Gmail, this is a standard setting. Any suggestions? Don't understand why this isn't a feature.

You are asking for a POP3(Post Office Protocol) service.
You cant find this service with HotMail default mail. I think you can get it if you pay for their services.
Reply:I was unable to find out how to do it through Hotmail (maybe you do have to pay for the option) back when I had it 2 years ago. I switched to gmail, and never looked back.
